    Your next pair of Levi jeans may include black trays, brown beer bottles, clear water bottles, and green soda bottles. The new WasteLess collection uses polyester fiber made from crushed plastic recyclables. The bottles are collected from municipal recycling programs around the country.

    With electoral politics in the air these days, and much at stake for those working towards a sustainable future, it’s hard to miss the fact that Republicans love to belittle the Obama administration’s failed investment in Solyndra. They have used the company’s bankrupcy, with some success, as a weapon in their efforts to keep the environment and the green economy out of the debate, suggesting that somehow the failure of this one company entitles them to dismiss the entire green economy as little more than “tilting at windmills.”

    Heineken USA recently released its 2011 sustainability report. The White Plains, NY-based subsidiary of the brewing giant touts a bevy of new accomplishments on the corporate social responsibility front. In addition to the typical brewing company promise to promote responsible drinking, Heineken USA also announced achievements on community work as well as the environment.

    Recently, Levi Strauss released their 2012 environmental sustainability report with some impressive results.

    As a “Big Company, Smaller Footprint,” Levi Strauss has made some solid strides towards environmental sustainability. For example, according to the report, the company has reduced their carbon footprint 13 percent below 2007 levels.

But now we need to stop and appreciate just what amazing imagery animals can come back with after their adventures. In the documentary Winged Planet that premiered this weekend on Discovery Channel, you can do just that thanks to director John Downer.

    Are you sure you bought the Rainforest Alliance coffee, organic bananas and fair trade certified chocolate? Shopping can sure be complicated these days. Walk into your Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, or even a Costco or Kroger, and you are bound to find products with a bevy of labels–or even more confusing, different brands that each sport a different stamp of approval.
